Otkriven dosad Zemlji najsličniji planet izvan Sunčevog Sustava
Koristeći mrežu teleskopa raspršenih širom svijeta,
grupa astronoma otkrila je dosad Zemlji najsličniji ekstrasolarni
(izvan Sunčevog Sustava) planet. U tom otkriću sudjelovala je i
Dijana Dominis (Sveučilište Potsdam). Planetu treba oko 10

Smallest Earth-like planet found
Using a network of telescopes scattered across the globe, a group of
astronomers, including
Dijana Dominis (Potsdam University), discovered a new extrasolar
planet significantly more Earth-like than any other planet found so far.
The planet, which is only about 5 times as massive as the Earth, circles
its parent star in about 10 years. It is the least massive exoplanet
around an ordinary star detected so far and most certainly has a rocky/icy
surface.

Kanibalisticka Kumovska Slama
otkrivena je i mapirana pomoću Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Struktura je
vrlo slabog sjaja, sadrzi na stotine tisuća zvijezda, a najvjerojatnije
je ostatak sudara manje patuljaste galaksije i Kumovske Slame.
Novootkrivena struktura je zanimljiva jer ju poput nebeskog kanibala
prozdire nasa galaksija Kumovska Slama. Glavni autor te studije je
Mario Jurić, a drugi
Željko Ivezić.

Cannibalistic Milky Way
A huge but very faint structure, containing hundreds of thousands of
stars spread over an area nearly 5,000 times the size of a full moon,
has been discovered and mapped by astronomers of the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey.
This structure is likely a remnant of a colision between a much smaller
dwarf galaxy and our Milky Way. The principal author of the findings is
Mario Jurić, and the second author is
Željko Ivezić.

Prva izravna slika ekstrasolarnog planeta
Zemlje.

First direct image of an extrasolar planet
All extrasolar planets discovered so far have been detected indirectly -
by measuring their gravitational interaction with the parent star.
GQ Lupi b is the first planet discovered by direct imaging of the planet
itself. This astronomical breakthrough was achieved by a group of
astronomers, including Ana Bedalov,
from Jena led
by Dr. Neuhäuser. The planet is several times more massive than Jupiter located
at 100 AU (1 AU = astronomical unit = distance
of the Earth from Sun) from its parent star GQ Lupi A, which is
450 light-years away from the Earth.

Kako asteoridi skrivaju svoje pravo lice
i Mariom Jurićem
(Princeton University) koristeći mjerenja boja asteroida sa
Sloan Digital Sky Survey.
U svom radu objavljenom u prestižnom časopisu
NATURE
A upravo takvu mogućnost
.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
How asteroids hide their true face
If meteorites originate from asteroids, why is their distribution of chemical compositions
different than in asteroids?
This question has been a long standing puzzle for astronomers, and the answer is maybe hidden
in the changes of surface chemistry due to long exposures to space.
An evidence of this process was discovered by a group of astronomers including
Željko Ivezić
and Mario Jurić (Princeton University).
They used measurements of asteroids' colors from
Sloan Digital Sky Survey to show how colors, which are indicators of surface chemistry,
change with the age of asteroids. This is why asteroids do not show us their true chemical
composition unless we scratch beneath their surface. Meteorites give us such an opportunity since
they are debris from asteroids. Their result is presented in the journal
NATURE.

robotskim teleskopom u Mallorci. Zahvaljujući simultanim promatranjima iz Višnjana i
Mallorce, uspjelo se vrlo brzo odrediti udaljenost tog asteroida i
Zemlje.

Another
asteroid of special importance due to its strange orbit has been discovered
from Višnjan Observatory and OAM - Mallorca Observatory in Spain. It is interesting that this discovery has been made by an international group of students, participants at the Višnjan School of Astronomy,
in an unusual way: they used 1300 km distant robotic telescope in Mallorca
over the Internet. Thanks to simultaneous observations from Visnjan and Mallorca
the asteroid's distance to Earth was determined rather quickly.

Marina Rejkuba (European Southern Observatory) pomoću promijenjivih zvijezda otkriva tajne galaksija
promijenjivih tipa RR Lyrae. Rezultat je
objavljen u
časopisu SCIENCE i ukazuje na sličnosti u evoluciji Velikog

Marina Rejkuba (European Southern Observatory) is using variable stars to reveal the secrets of galaxies
An international team of astronomers led by Marina Rejkuba has discovered more than 1000 bright variable stars of type Mira
in the galaxy Centaurus A. This is the first time that astronomers managed
to make such a stellar census in a galaxy outside the immediate neighborhood of our Milky Way. Since this opens a news method for studying the composition and evolution of galaxies, ESO prepared a press release
about the discovery. Marina also participated in a similar research of the
nearby galaxy Large Magellanic Cloud, but this time with the RR Lyrae type
of variables. This result is presented in the journal SCIENCE and suggests that Large Magellanic Cloud and the Milky Way share certain evolutionary similarities.
